Somewhere around three in the morning, you wake up for no clear reason.
Nothing is wrong. The house is quiet. The clock tells you this is not supposed to be happening, so you lie there, a little annoyed, waiting for sleep to come back.
Most people assume something is broken when this happens. Too much stress. Too much coffee. Too much time on a phone before bed, the usual list of modern culprits.
Historians and sleep researchers have found something different going on underneath all of that.
For most of human history, waking up in the middle of the night was not a malfunction. It was simply how nights used to work.
This is the biphasic sleep history behind what researchers now call first sleep and second sleep, and once you know it, those restless middle of the night hours start to look a lot less alarming.
What Historians Found Buried in Old Records
In the 1980s, a historian named Roger Ekirch was digging through archives in London, researching what ordinary nighttime life looked like in Europe and America before the Industrial Revolution.
While reading a criminal report from the 1600s, he came across a strange phrase. Someone had described going back to sleep after their "first sleep." He assumed it was a one off turn of phrase and kept working.
It was not a one off. Ekirch kept finding the same phrase, and its partner, "second sleep," over and over as he worked through more archives.
By 2001 he had published his findings, and by 2005 his book, "At Day's Close: Night in Times Past," laid out more than 500 references to this pattern, pulled from diaries, medical texts, court records, and works of literature.
He kept looking after that. Eventually he found more than 2,000 references across a dozen languages, some stretching back to ancient Greece and Rome. Roman writers had their own name for it, primus somnus, meaning first sleep, and the concept even shows up in Thucydides.
One especially human detail from Ekirch's research involves a nine year old English girl named Jane Rowland, who in 1699 mentioned in a written account that she had woken from her "first sleep." For a child in 1699, that phrase needed no explanation at all. Everyone around her simply understood what she meant.
What People Actually Did During the Midnight Hour
The pattern Ekirch pieced together worked something like this.
People went to bed not long after dark, since candles and oil lamps were expensive and firelight only stretched so far into an evening. That first stretch of sleep usually lasted three or four hours.
Then, sometime around midnight, people woke up. Not in a panic, and not because anything had gone wrong. They simply got up for a while.
Some people prayed during that window. Some tended the fire or checked on animals. Some visited a neighbor, since a lit window at midnight was a normal enough sight that it did not raise questions. Married couples often used the time for intimacy, and one French doctor's manual from the 1500s went as far as recommending couples wait for that stretch of the night rather than trying right before falling asleep, on the belief that a rested couple would enjoy the experience more.
After an hour or two of this quiet activity, people settled back down for a second sleep that carried them through to morning.
The idea was common enough that it worked its way into everyday language, showing up as a casual metaphor in political writing and letters, the same way we might casually reference a "coffee break" today without needing to explain what that means.

Why the Second Sleep Disappeared
If this pattern was so common for so long, why has almost nobody heard of it?
Ekirch traced the decline to the late 1600s, right around the time cities across Europe started installing public street lighting in larger numbers. Paris, London, and Amsterdam all pushed lighting projects forward in this period, and suddenly nighttime stopped being quite so dark and quite so empty.
Along with the lighting came a cultural shift toward valuing time itself differently. Clocks became more common in homes. Work started to be measured in scheduled hours rather than daylight and darkness. Efficient, unbroken sleep started to look like the responsible choice, and a broken up night started to look like wasted time.
By the early 1800s, the first sleep segment had stretched longer and longer, eating into the wakeful gap in the middle. By the end of that century, the second sleep had shrunk down to something like rolling over and drifting off again for a few extra minutes. The two sleeps had essentially merged into the single block most of us now think of as normal, uninterrupted sleep.
The Modern Experiment That Backed Up the Old Records
Old diary entries are compelling on their own, but a psychiatrist named Thomas Wehr, working at the National Institute of Mental Health in the early 1990s, wanted to know if this pattern had a real biological basis or if it was purely a habit tied to candlelight and social custom.
Wehr took eight healthy adult men and put them through a month long experiment. Instead of their usual schedule of roughly sixteen hours of light and eight hours of darkness, he flipped the ratio to something closer to a natural winter night, ten hours of light and fourteen hours of darkness, and let the men sleep as much as they wanted during those dark hours.
For the first few nights, the men slept around eleven hours a night, which researchers interpreted as their bodies paying off an existing sleep debt from modern life.
By the fourth week, though, something interesting had settled in. The men were sleeping about eight hours total, but not in one stretch. They fell asleep for roughly four hours, woke and stayed calmly awake for one to three hours, then fell back asleep for another four hour stretch. Researchers also found that the onset of each sleep period lined up with a rise in melatonin, the hormone your brain releases in response to darkness.
In other words, once modern lighting was removed from the picture for long enough, the body drifted back toward the exact rhythm described in centuries of old letters and diaries.
Where the Simple Story Gets More Complicated
It would be a tidy ending to say humans are biologically wired for two sleeps and modern light ruined it for everyone. The full research picture is a bit messier than that, and being honest about the mess is worth doing.
The Hunter-Gatherer Study That Complicated Everything
In 2015, a research team led by Gandhi Yetish and Jerome Siegel studied sleep in three present day communities that still live without electricity, the Hadza of Tanzania, the San of Namibia, and the Tsimane of Bolivia.
If segmented sleep were a universal human default just waiting for darkness to reappear, these groups seemed like the perfect place to find it. Instead, the researchers found the opposite. All three groups mostly slept in one consolidated stretch, averaging somewhere between 5.7 and 7.1 hours a night, falling asleep a few hours after sunset and waking close to sunrise with barely a nap in between.
This does not erase Ekirch's findings or Wehr's experiment. It does mean segmented sleep is not some ancient switch sitting inside every human body, guaranteed to flip on the moment artificial light disappears.
Why Night Length Might Matter More Than Hardwired Biology
The most likely explanation ties back to geography rather than biology alone.
The Hadza, San, and Tsimane all live close to the equator, where nights stay a fairly consistent length year round and rarely stretch far beyond twelve hours. Ekirch's historical evidence, on the other hand, comes overwhelmingly from higher latitude parts of Europe, where winter nights regularly ran fourteen hours or longer, which happens to match almost exactly the artificial night length Wehr recreated in his lab.
Support for this idea shows up elsewhere too. A 2017 study of a farming community in Madagascar found clear evidence of segmented sleep, averaging around 6.5 hours a night split into two parts. Some contemporary groups, including the Tiv people of central Nigeria, still describe their sleep using their own versions of the terms first sleep and second sleep.
The pattern that emerges looks less like a fixed law of human biology and more like a flexible option, one that tends to show up when the night stretches long enough to make it worthwhile, and stays hidden when it does not.
What This Means For Your Own 3am Wake Up
None of this is a medical diagnosis, and it should not replace a conversation with a doctor if sleep problems are genuinely affecting your life. It is worth keeping in mind the next time you find yourself staring at the ceiling at three in the morning, though.
Give the Quiet Time Room Before You Fight It
Instead of immediately treating a midnight wake up as a crisis, try treating it the way people did for most of history, as an ordinary, low pressure stretch of quiet time.
Avoid reaching for a bright phone screen, since that light can interfere with the same melatonin response that helps guide you back to sleep. A little reading by dim light, some quiet stretching, or simply lying there with your thoughts can work just as well as forcing the issue. Sleep tends to return more easily when you stop fighting the fact that you are briefly awake.
When a Midnight Wake Up Is Worth Mentioning to a Doctor
An occasional stretch of calm wakefulness that resolves within an hour or so, especially during the darker months of the year, lines up reasonably well with the pattern researchers have described.
Regular waking that drags on far longer than that, comes with real anxiety, or leaves you exhausted the next day is a different situation, and one worth bringing up with a healthcare provider rather than chalking up to ancient sleep habits.
What This Small Piece of History Says About Memory
There is something worth sitting with in how this whole pattern nearly vanished from memory.
For roughly two thousand years, splitting the night into two sleeps was so ordinary that almost nobody thought to write it down as anything remarkable. It survives today only because a handful of stray lines happened to end up in a criminal report, a doctor's manual, and a nine year old's account of her own night, all of which happened to survive long enough for a historian to find them centuries later.
Most of the small, ordinary details of daily life are not so lucky.
